Yesterday, my sweet Julen turned five-years-old. As he was born on the fifth, it was his golden birthday. (Do other nations celebrate this?) I wanted his day to be special, but not overwhelming as birthday's sometimes can be for little ones.
We celebrated at school with his friends, papa and Tia. He was so happy it was his turn to wear the crown and the rainbow cape. His other preschool teacher made him a felted ninja gnome and we ate chocolate cupcakes with GOLD frosting.
I decided to keep the afternoon party small and invited only his BFF. The two have been at my preschool since they were both two so have a lot of history together already. We went out for lunch, ate pizza and gelato, then to Lego world at the mall (these two boys are absolutely crazy for Legos!) and then they went on rides. They were too tired to go sledding afterward, so we postponed that for today. They were both over-the-moon and had such a wonderful time together...I'm so happy for their wonderful friendship...it made for an extra special day for Julen.
Five is so significant for so many reasons, but the biggest one for me is he will be moving on to Kindergarten next year (*gulp*). He will no longer be with me 24/7, coming to school with me every morning...he will have a new teacher and begin doing and learning things that I will no longer be in his presence for. I know...it will be good for both of us, but still, it is a hard one to think about. He is no longer a baby.
He asked me for two things for his birthday. One, a golden wool felted ball like the one we use in the birthday story at school (see it in the second photo on this post), the other thing he wants is for me to knit him a pair of leg warmers. We got as far as picking out the yarn (his color choice), but I've yet to find a pattern (help?). If I work like crazy maybe I can knit them up by his family party on Sunday.
He made his first appearance on this blog here, back in 2008. (Incredible that I'm still at it!)
Happy Birthday nene.
