This week I'll be sharing what we did at my preschool last week during four days of Bugs + Butterflies Camp. We started each day in the yard or going on short walks in search of bugs...a good magnifying glass came in handy for getting close up to the creatures we found.
Day 2-All about honeybees
-
Honey bees fly at 15 miles per hour
-
Their wings stroke 11,400 times a minute...thus creating the buzzing sound
-
They are the only insect that provide food for humans
-
They have FIVE eyes
-
They never sleep!
We read: The Humblebee Hunter by Deborah Hopkinson
This is such a sweet story inspired by the life of Charles Darwin and his children. In the story, the children dust a bee with flour so they can track how many plants they go to in one minute. A lovely introduction to pollination.
We also read: Are You a Bee? by Judy Allen
This book gives a nice peek into the world of bees. It talks about why bees are helpful to us in our gardens.
We sang:
What's all that buzzing that's going around?
Out in the meadow fair
It's just the sound that the honeybees make as they gather the nectar there
Buzz Buzz Buzz Buzz Buzz
In and out of the clover
Patiently working the whole day through
Tomorrow they'll start all over.
And also sang:
Bumble bee, bumble bee,
Landing on my nose,
Bumble bee, bumble bee,
Now he's on my toes.
On my arms, on my legs,
On my elbows.
Bumble bee oh bumble bee
He lands and then he goes.
For snack we ate: Brown rice cakes drizzled with honey
We also built an obstacle course outside, running through it like a bee in a garden. Our goal was to try and "pollenate" as we ran through hoops, over stumps, up the hill around the rocks, etc.
We made: Wool roving bees...simply wrap wool roving around the childs finger and have them wet felt it in the sink. Rubbing a little soap into the wool to help it felt. Once it dries, thread a bit of organza through the top for wings. In no time, I had busy little buzzing bees playing with their new finger puppets.
We also made: Garden drawings using our beeswax crayons.
Tomorrow is all about spiders.
