Despite the rain, our preschool celebrated Martinmas last night with a traditional lantern walk. We ended up making lanterns that look very much like last years.
I experimented with something new and Peanut and I made these...
...a cross between paper lanterns and yarn bowls. And while the idea seemed like fun and they DO look pretty, they were a bit difficult for my five-year-old to make and the yarn uses alot (ALOT) of glue so I decided not to challenge my preschoolers with this project. Instead we made the same kind as last year.
Day 1: using a mix of glue and water we pasted white tissue paper over the bottom part of balloons.
They dried over-night in the basement.
Day 2: The kids added colorful tissue paper.
Again, drying in the basement.
Once dry, we cut the balloons out.
Then we punched four holes along the edge, strung yarn through them and attached them to sticks, for carrying.
Although the lanterns had trouble staying lit in the wind and rain, we had a lovely walk by the lake which ended in a spontaneous game of swinging from the willow tree.
Gorgeous lanterns!

MARAVILLOSO!!!!
BESOS.
Happy Halloween y feliz castañada!

I'm thinking with much smaller balloons - maybe water bombs these would make lovely window decroations. Hmmm, thinking cap is on now.
Thanks for the inspiration.

lovely idea! we tried making the yarn bowl style (thinking we could weave leaves between the yarn) when it was our autumn lantern walk, but when we popped the balloons they yarn stuck & imploded inwards lol! your way you could keep the glue off the balloon.. :)

Beautiful lanterns! A group of my friends made lanterns (the tissue paper on glass jars type) in preparation for a walk we're doing on Monday night to celebrate Martinmas. I'm searching for appropriate songs to sing for our walk; if it isn't too much trouble, could you email me at kvjudge @ yahoo dot com? Many thanks and best wishes! I just found your blog through a link from GardenMama.

i wanted to do these last year for Christmas - for the kids to carry when we went out delivering our neighbor gifts - but it just didn't happen. I am hoping it will this year, though!
did you use real candles? I was wondering if I should find battery-tea lights...
