this weekend, I thought I would show pictures of our (mostly) finished kitchen redo. What does my kitchen have to do with Earth Day? Well, we are fortunate to have a dear friend who makes beautiful furniture out of reclaimed wood. He also uses vintage ceiling tin he has rescued from old buildings. Here are photos of our kitchen before:
We opened up half of the wall from the kitchen to the dining room and our friend installed this gorgeous countertop. The wood came from the floor of a small abandoned schoolhouse in Southern Iowa.
More wood countertops and the new sink backsplash is made from the ceiling tin.
Our new beautiful butcher block and shelves (more tin). And no kitchen is complete without a compost bucket...the stainless steel bucket hanging on the far right. This one works like a charm and can be found here.
We had to use regulation cabinets in order to install the microwave and purchased sturdy Home Depot ones that our friend cleverly changed. First, by distressing the wood and then he created new doors using more reclaimed wood and tin to match the rest of the kitchen.
Finally...one of my favorite pieces of furniture, the kitchen cabinet.
Our dining room table is also made by our friend, as well as a bookshelf and dresser that can be seen here (scroll down). I love the feel of all this beautifully hand crafted furniture in our home, I love to consider the history of the materials that were used and I love that there are no two pieces alike.
Also in celebration of Earth Day I finally signed up for our local CSA program. We have been participating in one for the past four years now and if you've never done it, I encourage you give it a try. What could be better than knowing you have a fresh batch of organic vegetables coming your way every week, all summer long? If you are in the US, to find a CSA near you, go here and simply type in your zip code. If you're outside of the US, Abel & Cole (link from Little Cotton Rabbits) is one way to go and I'm sure there are other options worth looking into.
Happy Earth Day Everyone!!
